Genealogist's Christmas Eve

'Twas the night before Christmas
When all through the house
Not a creature was stirring,
Not even my spouse.

The dining room table with clutter was spread
With pedigree charts and with letters which said...
"Too bad about the data for which you wrote;
Sank in a storm on an ill-fated boat."

Stacks of old copies of wills and such
Were proof that my work had become too much.
Our children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads.

And I at my table was ready to drop
From work on my album with photos to crop.
Christmas was here, and such was my lot
That presents and goodies and toys I'd forgot.

Had I not been busy with grandparents' wills,
I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills,
While others bought gifts to bring Christmas cheers,
I'd spent time researching those birth dates and years.

While I was thus musing about my sad plight,
A strange noise on the lawn gave me such a great fright.
Away to the window I flew in a flash,
Tore open the drapes and yanked up the sash.

When what with my wondering eyes should appear,
But an overstuffed sleigh and eight small reindeer.
Up to the house top the reindeer they flew,
With a sleigh full of toys and 'ole Santa Claus, too.

And then in a twinkle, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of thirty-two hoofs.
As I drew in my head, and bumped it on the sash,
Down the cold chimney fell Santa--KER-RASH!

"Dear" Santa had come from the roof in a wreck,
And tracked soot on the carpet, (I could wring his short neck!)
Spotting my face, good 'ole Santa could see
I had no Christmas spirit you'd have to agree.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work
And filled all the stockings, (I felt like a jerk).
Here was Santa, who'd brought us such gladness and joy:
When I'd been too busy for even one toy.

He spied my research on the table all spread
"A genealogist!" He cried! (My face was all red!)
"Tonight I've met many like you," Santa grinned,
As he pulled from his sack a large book he had penned.

I gazed with amusement--the cover it read
Genealogy Lines for Which You Have Plead.
"I know what it's like as a genealogy bug."
He said as he gave me a great Santa hug.

"While the elves make the sleighful of toys I now carry,
I do some research in the North Pole Library!
A special treat I am thus able to bring,
To genealogy folk who can't find a thing."

"Now off you go to your bed for a rest,
I'll clean up the house from this genealogy mess."
As I climbed up the stairs full of gladness and glee,
I looked back at Santa who'd brought much to me.

While settling in bed, I heard Santa's clear whistle,
To his team, which then rose like the down of a thistle.
And I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight,
"Family history is Fun! Merry Christmas! Goodnight!"

Some Web sites attribute the poem to Dora Mills c. 2001, but it has been around since at least 1988. Dora Mills does appear to have written at least one poem based on Clement Moore's poem, titled A Christmas Incident which appeared in the Ash Tree Echo in January 1983.

Exemplary families sought for unique award

If you know of an exemplary family in Central Indiana, Family Service wants to hear from you.

Family Service of Central Indiana, Inc., the oldest social-service not-for-profit organization in Central Indiana, is accepting nominations for the annual Alice M. Ross “Salute to Family” award that recognizes exemplary families from the community.

Every family has the potential to be exemplary. Often characterized by togetherness, communication, and commitment on a day-to-day basis as well as perseverance and flexibility in the face of challenges, exemplary families can be traditional or non-traditional in nature and include blended, extended, adoptive, and foster families.

“The Alice M. Ross ‘Salute to Family’ Award is such a positive experience for everyone,” Family Service President Edie Olson said. “It engages the entire community in celebrating successful families and also encourages individuals to reflect on ways they can strengthen their own family.”

For a family to be considered for this award, nominations must be submitted by Feb. 28 to Family Service (Attn: Salute to Families Awards Committee; 615 N. Alabama St, Suite 320; Indianapolis, IN 46204). Nomination forms are also available online at www.family-service-inc.org/events/award.asp or by contacting Mike Runestad at 317-634-6341 x 135.

Any member of the community may nominate a family they admire, and families may nominate themselves as well. Families may be contacted for additional information or for a follow-up interview with a Family Service staff member.

The award-winning family will be publicly recognized at “Salute to Families,” presented by United Water. This annual breakfast is scheduled for April 21 at the Union Federal Colts Complex ( 7001 West 56th Street) and will raise support for and awareness of the many programs of Family Service. The award recipients and the nominator will be provided with complimentary tickets.

Purpose of the Blog: Effective Family Communication

It’s progressive…requires faith, work, and determination…promotes unity, love, and respect.

Introducing…

The Randolph-McElroy Family Website

The Official Web Portal for Family Communication

Steve Randolph w/ the assistance of Cory Lacy and Dante Britten are proud to announce the development of the family website. This website will serve as the ‘official’ location where all members may receive accurate up-to-date info about the family. In order to encourage more interactive communication among members a blog has been set-up for posting your comments and ideas. The blog will allow each member a ‘voice’ and as well as provide valuable info to the website development committee needed to effectively manage the website.

In celebration of the launching of the website, nominations are being accepted for recognizing any family member, any age that has demonstrated the attributes of our family character: faith, work, and determination while promoting the expression of family excellence through unity, respect, and love. You may submit your nominations/confirm previous nomination/comments to:

the family email address: randolph_mcelroy@yahoo.com or
on the family blog: http://www.randolph-mcelroy.blogspot.com or
post directly to blog by email: randolph_mcelroy.family@blogger.com .

From the nominations a person will be selected and featured on the website w/ in-depth interview, biography, as well as any photos/video clips made available by the person.

*This will hopefully establish a well-integrated communication process that provides an opportunity for family input/suggestions/comments but more importantly provide a means where there is confidence in the accuracy of information that is disseminated, and less confusion resulting from conflict of information. Furthermore, there’s an opportunity for all ideas/comments to be given full consideration before actually placing on website/making it official by the website development committee. The blog is set up so that comment/postings are moderated It’s progressive…requires faith, work, and determination…promotes unity, love, and respect.
